It is often thought that online discussions are derailed because people feel they can get away with anything. And also that without facial expression we find a message more unclear. In this research, we find the opposite is true. Online communication is so clear that people can come across as completely uninhibited, when in fact they are not. Therefore, online discussion of difficult topics on which people disagree can be harmful for human relationships. Especially when you don't know people very well. How to avoid this? Carla explains it in this video.
