Where are our international alumni now? Did they stay after graduation, did they
return to their home country, or did they end up going elsewhere in the world? What did they get out of their studies? Is Tilburg University still on their minds? Where did the path from Tilburg University lead for alumna Tanya Moredo from Canada?

When I think of Tilburg University...

"I think of the unique perspective the program offered me on social and cultural issues", says Tanya looking back on her time in Tilburg. "While the cultural context and social issues in Auckland are distinct from those in Tilburg, the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that I developed while studying at Tilburg University have been invaluable in my life."

"I had quite some work experience before I arrived in Tilburg. I already had the privilege of collaborating with visionary and strategic thinkers from around the world. While pursuing my undergraduate degree in Conflict Studies and Human Rights at the University of Ottawa, I had the honor of coaching young leaders through a Not-For-Profit founded by Christian Philippe (Democratic Republic of Congo), Yasmine Ben (Algeria) and myself. We called this 'Glocal Initiatives', local action for global change; advocating and presenting at World Social Forums in Tunisia and Brazil. After graduation, I started to work in the Senate of Canada, supporting the Honourable Thanh Hai Ngo in his committees on Human Rights, Aboriginal Affairs, and Finance. This experience gave me invaluable insight into the importance of advocating for those who are furthest from power and most vulnerable. Later on, I had the pleasure of serving as the event planner for the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, where I witnessed his commitment to public service and his dedication to advancing the well-being of Canadians."

"Unsure of what returning to school would be like, I was rewarded with meeting and connecting with inspiring people from around the world who gave me the tools and skills which I use in my daily life on a regular basis."

The university provided me with an enriching academic and cultural experience that I will cherish forever

What is your take-away message from Tilburg University?

"The university provided me with an enriching academic and cultural experience that I will cherish forever. The world is full of bright and talented people. I am grateful that I was able to work alongside and be inspired by their vision. Tilburg University embodies a place where you can grow both personally and professionally. The university offers a supportive and nurturing environment that encourages students to reach their full potential in ways that supersede country borders."

"The Master's in International Relations, Management of Culture and Diversity program gave me a broader understanding of global issues, cultural management, and diversity. Its focus on practical experience allowed me to develop my skills and apply my knowledge in real-world situations at the same time."

"I will always remember the experience of the international classroom, with classmates from the Netherlands and Turkey and together with whom I was able to interview NATO officials on equity and discuss challenges at every level. Working in a multicultural environment has been instructive in many ways. It has helped me to better understand the unique perspectives of people from different cultural backgrounds and to appreciate the importance of cultural competence in my work. This prepared me for future employment in advocacy and international relations. "

What are you doing now?

"After graduation, I moved to Canada and now work as an Empowerment Specialist at Auckland Council. In this role, through a range of initiatives and programs, I work to support the wellbeing and prosperity of young people, some of the most vulnerable diverse communities, in Auckland. This includes advising local boards and council-wide teams on impactful investment in support of youth leadership, decision-making, and active participation, as well as supporting youth-led social change initiatives and overseeing funding, coaching, and advising for local board-funded youth councils. I strive to create meaningful and inclusive approaches to youth decision-making and leadership that are culturally responsive and grounded in the needs and aspirations of young people in Auckland."

My footprints continue to make their mark with each step I take alongside my classmates creating a more equitable future

Tanya’s footprints at Tilburg University

"What I brought back with me from Tilburg, both literally and figuratively, was a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and a commitment to promoting social justice and equity. I hope that my classmates learned from my perspectives and experiences, just as I learned from theirs. I also hope that the university and teachers learned from my unique perspective as a student from Canada with a mixed heritage and deep-rooted connection to South America, and that they continue to strive for greater cultural diversity and inclusivity in their programs and initiatives."
