General information TiU Dataverse

TiU Dataverse is the recommended storage facility for datasets after the conclusion of the research according to the Research Data Management Regulations. Also funding agencies such as ZonMw and the ERC consider TiU Dataverse a suitable facility for long term storage of research data. TiU Dataverse is managed by the Research Data Office (RDO) of Library and IT Services (LIS).

TiU Dataverse takes part in the DataverseNL network of Dutch universities and institutes. The data management is in the hands of the member organizations, while the national organization Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) manages the network. DANS is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). DataverseNL is built on a scientific platform developed by Harvard University that is used worldwide.

Within TiU Dataverse each School has its own dataverse. This way, all datasets of a School or Department can be displayed together. From the description of the dataset, it is immediately clear to third parties whether the dataset is available for reuse and (if so) under which conditions. Every deposited dataset is assigned a DOI, which makes it possible to refer to the dataset permanently.

See, for example, the dataverse of TSB’s department of Social Psychology https://dataverse.nl/dataverse/socialpsychology.

Advantages TiU Dataverse

What are the advantages of using TiU Dataverse to store and share your research data?

  • Your dataset is assigned a DOI (a persistent identifier) which makes it easy for yourself and others to refer to the dataset.
  • You can manage access to and re-use of your own data.
  • A dataset available via TiU Dataverse is easy to cite. A "ready-made" citation reference is available.
  • TiU Dataverse ensures safe storage of your data.
  • The research data are stored in the Netherlands, so Dutch (privacy) laws are applicable.
  • You can meet funding requirements by depositing your research data in TiU Dataverse.
  • You comply with the FAIR-principles. Research data are described, safely and permanently stored and (if desired) made available to colleagues and others.
  • Sharing your data increases the impact and visibility of your research.
  • You can link your dataset to its related publication(s).
  • You can update your stored dataset during your research, and track changes with version control.
  • The datasets are provided with metadata according to international standards (DDI, Data Documentation Initiative).
  • Downloadable statistics are available for the datasets.
  • The Research Data Office can assist you in depositing your data in TiU Dataverse (Contact: dataverse@tilburguniversity.edu).

For which data is TiU Dataverse suitable?

Not every type of dataset can be deposited in Dataverse. Dataverse is not suitable for sensitive data. Please contact the Research Data Office before uploading files that may contain sensitive data. Sufficiently anonymised datasets may be included in Dataverse. A processing agreement has been concluded with the provider of TiU Dataverse. Pseudonymised data may be stored in Dataverse. However, the pseudonymised data must be deposited using the 'restricted access' functionality and not be made public. In addition, the key file must be stored in a different location than Dataverse. In some other cases, it may not be possible to archive and publish your dataset via Dataverse (or another repository); files must be free of third party rights, copyrights, and other legal rights.

Depositing datasets in TiU Dataverse; when?

The Tilburg University Regulations on research data management state that the empirical data of all scientific research reported in scientific publications should be documented and archived in such a way that they can be replicated. However, also if the research data are unique in their kind and when exactly the same data cannot be replicated (e.g. because the data relate to a unique place and time), it is important to share these data with other researchers.

Datasets should be deposited at the latest when publishing an article (or other publication) based on the research data. Datasets can also be deposited prior to the publication of research results. However, TiU Dataverse is not intended for the storage of working versions; the data package must be closed and complete before publishing. If necessary, it is possible to update a dataset after publication, for example by adding new files or changing metadata. See the FAQ page for more detailed information.

Depositing datasets in TiU Dataverse; how?

Depositing a dataset in TiU Dataverse is simple. However, there are a number of quality requirements for the data package to guarantee sustainability, findability and usability in the future. The use of sustainable file formats is one of them and good documentation of the dataset is another. The use of a data management plan helps to make a dataset suitable for long-term storage already at the start of the research. Researchers can deposit their dataset themselves in TiU Dataverse or the Research Data Office can do this for them. More practical information and general instructions on how to deposit a dataset can be found on the page Practical information.
