Netspar research: the new Dutch pension system delivers what it promises
18th January 2022The Tilburg University researchers examined the income effects at both the time of transition to this new scheme and in the longer run. The conclusion is that the new pension system does what it promises. The chance of higher pensions is much greater than the risk of a lower pension.

Paper Els Gijsbrechts accepted for publication at the International Journal of Research in Marketing
13th January 2022The paper “The Dark Side of Innovation: How New SKUs Affect Brand Choice in the Presence of Consumer Uncertainty and Learning” by Els Gijsbrechts, co-authored with Bernadette van Ewijk, a former Tilburg PhD who is currently at the UvA and Jan-Benedict Steenkamp from UNC in Chapel Hill, has been accepted for publication at the International Journal of Research in Marketing.

25th anniversary Centerdata: Interview with Arie Kapteyn and Marcel Das

Since 1997, this independent non-profit research institute, established on the Tilburg University campus, has provided input for answers to research questions in the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences. 11th January 2022As in previous years, the researchers of the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM) do well in the Economists Top 40. In the 2021 edition, Tilburg University ranks second, just like last year, after Erasmus University Rotterdam, and TiSEM takes the lead again in its output of high-impact articles.

07th January 2022The 2020 publication at the Journal of Marketing Research by our former PhD candidate Kristopher Keller (currently working at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill), together with his two advisors, Inge Geyskens and Marnik Dekimpe on: “Opening the Umbrella: The Effects of Rebranding Multiple Category-Specific Private-Label Brands to One Umbrella Brand” just received the Best Retail & Pricing Paper Award from the AMA’s Retail and Pricing SIG.

Paper Hans Haans accepted for publication in the International Journal of Logistics Management
07th January 2022The paper by Hans Haans (together with Néomie Raassens from the Eindhoven University of Technology and Shantanu Mullick from Coventry University) on: “Surviving the hectic early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study to the supply chain strategies of food service firms in times of a crisis” has been accepted for publication at the International Journal of Logistics Management.

Tilburg University to launch multidisciplinary expertise center on support for EU policy
16th December 2021Tilburg University will set up a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for European Values (CoEV) to more fully understand popular support for EU policy. Research, educational, and public events will be developed regarding six political domains, such as the new green deal, the digital society, and protecting democracy.

Social responsibility central theme of winners Tilburg University Challenge 2021
10th December 2021The Tilburg University Challenge 2021 has awarded all three prizes for the best business plan proposed by student teams to socially responsible ideas. During a livestream event on December 9th the Ideation Award went to Anouk van Anrooij and Daniel Gelsing for their healthy and fruity drink that is also sustainable. The Business Ready Award and the Audience Award went to Freek van Litsenburg, who, with Bigger Picture Clothing, sells clothing that is both sustainable in production and has a large social impact.

Delay laws on firearms purchases save lives
22nd November 2021Legislation that enforces a ‘cooling off’ period between purchasing and acquiring a firearm reduces impulse purchases. It also limits the number of homicides, especially in the domestic sphere. This is demonstrated by behavioral economist David Schindler of Tilburg University on the basis of a quantitative study in various U.S. States. The publication will appear in the renowned scientific journal Review of Economics and Statistics.

Buskers earn more on Sundays
22nd November 2021For hundreds of years, buskers (street musicians) have been earning money performing in busy public areas. Now, the first-ever large-scale study has explored which factors determine listeners’ giving behavior. A field study of 80,471 consumers and 72 buskers, conducted by the Tilburg researcher Samuel Stäbler and Kim Katharina Mierisch (a consultant at Simon-Kucher & Partners), yields surprising results.

The red energy performance label increasingly hurts home sales
15th November 2021The energy efficiency of one's own home is becoming increasingly important, even when selling. A study by the universities of Tilburg and Maastricht shows that non-energy rated homes (energy perfomance label red; F and G) homes are being sold at a growing price discount. The researchers analyzed NVM data from more than 450,000 housing transactions since 2018 and found a price discount that, for a single-family home, rose to more than 30,000 euros in 2021.
