On 17 November, EPO Uitgeverij published the book De kluseconomie: Voor uitbuiting, klik 'aanvaard' by Tim Christiaens, assistant professor of economic ethics at DFI. The book discusses the rise of platform work in the Netherlands and Belgium and potential policy responses for a future of work more respectful of labour rights. Platform companies like Uber, Deliveroo and Airbnb use techniques of algorithmic management to amass personal data and increase financial revenues at the expense of wages and working conditions of gig workers. Christiaens uses Karl Marx's philosophy of technology and Italian operaismo to identify these power imbalances in the gig economy and argues for cooperative platforms as a potential solution. The book has been presented at public book launches in Brussels (with Denktank Minerva), and at research seminars at Utrecht University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and the European Trade Union Institute.
