Accelerator Workshop: Social Entrepreneurship

Date: Time: 10:00 Location: T.B.D.

The past two decades saw a rise in focus on Entrepreneurship – as a topic to be taught in business and management schools, as a focused approach by regional governments and policymakers, and equally by investors. The rise in the launch of new startups every day, the scale-ups, and the birth of ‘unicorns’ is proof of the importance of Entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurs are shaping and contributing to society and the economy.

Workshop Social Business Modelling

However, success is often measured in terms of profitability and market share. Unfortunately, such a focus tends to ignore often or be unaware of more significant social and environmental societal issues. Not surprisingly, we witness that capitalist-driven, shareholder-focused companies and enterprises often grab profits for themselves while negatively impacting the communities around them. Therefore, this raises the question - How can organizations continue to make economic gains but equally contribute to the society and communities in which they are embedded? Alternatively, can entrepreneurs focus on creating social good while not being shy about making profits to keep their business running? Fortunately, the answer is Yes!

In less than a decade, the number of organizations that focus equally on creating a positive impact on society alongside making profits has been growing. Such organizations – referred to as Social Enterprises, and the founders as Social Entrepreneurs, play a balancing act of making sure that they focus not just on profits but also on how they can create an impact on various communities through their venture. However, structuring such organizations – how to balance the profit-making focus with the focus of “spending” money for doing good is often trickier than it seems.

This workshop will help you understand and gain insights using Social Enterprise Business Modelling approach.

Some key points to cover during the workshop are:

  • How is a Social enterprise different than a regular enterprise/company/startup, but also different from NGOs, foundations (Stichting) (Using various Dutch and international company examples)
  • Can a regular enterprise become a Social enterprise?
  • Learning how to use Social Enterprise Business Model Canvas to understand how to design a new Social Enterprise or restructure your existing enterprise. (Using your idea as an example or one provided in the workshop)

You do not need a business, management, or entrepreneurship background to attend and benefit from this workshop. You will quickly grasp the learnings if you ever purchased a product from any store or sold one.
