Tilburg Law School's Willem Witteveen Lecture, delivered this year by Rector Magnificus Wim van de Donk, is now available as an essay in the Tilburg Series in Academic Education under the title 'Beacons and Movement. About universities'.

In 2012 Willem Witteveen wrote: "What always gets in the way of discussions about good teaching and research is that from the outset it is tacitly and explicitly about money. That is a frame of mind that narrows the collective view, let's think about what we really want and then start looking for the means to achieve the desired profile.'

In his essay Beacons and Movements. About Universities, published on the occasion of the Witteveen Lecture, Rector Wim van de Donk takes up the gauntlet, says Prof. Maurice Adams, organizer of the Witteveen Lecture, who recommends reading the essay wholeheartedly.

“Van de Donk argues that universities should not be viewed only through the lens of efficient labor markets and economic utility and advocates the recognition and appreciation of a distinct profile of our universities, of our colleges and academies, and of what they could undertake together.”

The annual Willem Witteveen Lecture was established in memory of Prof. Willem Witteveen of Tilburg Law School, also founder of University College Tilburg. He was killed in the summer of 2014 along with his wife and daughter Marit, undergraduate student in Liberal Arts and Sciences at Tilburg University, when flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine.
