Van den Berg is a professor at the University of Groningen (RUG) and the Groningen University Medical Center (UMCG). The Board of Governors monitors the objectives of the university and functions as its supervisory council.

Chair of the Foundation Hugo Reumkens LLM: “With his extensive academic experience in the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK, and as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences (KNAW), Professor Gerard van den Berg not only enriches the Board of Governors with academic expertise but also with an international perspective and relevant knowledge of the European academic field. Given Professor van den Berg’s familiarity with Tilburg University’s research and education portfolio, his appointment is of great value to the continuity and future orientation of the Board of Governors.

As we welcome Professor van den Berg, we say goodbye to Professor Wil van der Aalst, who is stepping down as Governor after eight years of service. We thank him for his significant contributions to Tilburg University for which we owe him a debt of gratitude."

The research of Professor van den Berg (1962) concerns labor markets and the relationship between the economy and health. Van den Berg studied econometrics and philosophy at RUG and in 1990 obtained a doctorate (with honors) at Tilburg University. From 1996 to 2009, he was a professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). He has also lived and worked in Germany, the UK, Sweden, and the USA. In 2009, he was the first economist and social scientist ever to be awarded the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Professorship Prize. Professor van den Berg has been a member of the KNAW since 2010, he has authored contributions to leading journals in economics, econometrics, and epidemiology, and he was Joint Managing Editor of The Economic Journal

Professor Gerard van den Berg: “In recent decades, Tilburg University has carved a strong international name for itself as a center of excellent research and solid academic education. I believe this relates to its motto ‘Understanding Society.’ Understanding structures, processes, behavior, interactions, and dynamics is crucial to making reliable and sound policy recommendations and to having a positive impact on society. It is a privilege to be in a position to contribute to the further development of this university.”
