Turn it for the better: How can VR help solve the global problem of unhealthy diets?

How can Virtual Reality technology help solve the global problem of unhealthy diets? Rachelle de Vries and her team are developing and evaluating an immersive multisensory VR food environment with 'Smell-e Technology' to research food choice behavior. Watch her presentation at TEDxBreda on this technology and the power of smell.

Although people report a fairly positive commitment to healthy eating, in practice, they often struggle to make healthier food choices. Rachelle de Vries and her team see great potential in using VR to study the forces at play during moments of food choice, especially when a crucial element can be integrated: smell.

“By incorporating the sense of smell, it is our personal ambition to bridge the existing gap between virtual and real-life food experiences. In the coming months, we will not only develop this technology, but also validate is as a tool for research.”

Watch the presentation Rachelle gave at TEDxBreda and learn about the power of smell and how a ‘Smell-e Technology’ can be created by connecting the digital sciences and the sensory sciences.
