Who will control the truth in the synthetic reality we create with AI?

This is one of the questions addressed in TAISIG Talk #22 in which Pieter Spronck and Aimen Taimur interview Bart van der Sloot. Bart is affiliated with the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) and author of the recently published book "Regulating the Synthetic Society".

Conversation topics

While the interview also discusses some positive aspects of generative AI, it focuses on some fundamental concerns.

  • Who will control the truth in the synthetic reality we create with AI? Will it be the commercial, private companies that run the technology? And if so, what does this mean for the norms that will be integrated into the technology?
  • What does it mean if people increasingly live in their own (virtual) reality, determining what feedback they receive and enabling them to escape the frictions of human relationships that are so important to our development?
  • What if, with the rise of deep fake technology, we can no longer judge what is true and what is not? What does that mean for society and interrelationships when you consider that truth is the foundation for the rule of law, the media, democracy, and personal interaction?

Given the enormous impact that generative AI will have, Bart van der Sloot calls on people to join the dialogue about questions like: what parts of AI do and don’t we want? And for the applications we do want: when, by whom, and under what conditions? Since technology is likely to affect everything in society, this is a conversation we need to have right now.
