Participate in the national survey on student housing

Published: 17th April 2022 Last updated: 17th April 2023

What type of student accommodation do you want? By participating in the national survey on student housing (Landelijke monitor studentenhuisvesting, LMS), you as a student get the opportunity to answer this question and other ones on the subject of student accommodation. The LMS is an annual national survey among students about their housing situation and housing needs.

Based on the results of the survey, municipalities, educational institutions, and student accommodation providers decide how much and what type of accommodation should be built. Do you want to have an influence on accommodation for students? Then remember to participate in this survey. This week, students will receive an email with a participation link. Several AirPods Pro and other funs prizes will be raffled off among those who complete the survey.

Why LMS?

It is important for student accommodation providers to know how many students will be studying where and what housing needs these students have. This will enable providers to adapt their offer of student accommodation to the demand and to students’ wishes. Student accommodation providers, municipalities, educational institutions, and student unions use the results of the survey to make agreements on who much and where student accommodation needs to be realized and to ensure that housing options meet students’ wishes.

About the survey

This survey is partly facilitated by the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and is carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences (Vereniging Hogescholen, VH), Universities of The Netherlands (formerly: VSNU), the Dutch organization for internationalization in education Nuffic, and almost all institutions of higher education in the Netherlands.

The survey, that has been conducted all over the Netherlands in all student cities every year since 2012, was completed by almost 50,000 students in 2020. Over the years, it has been extended with more attention for specific groups and, for instance, questions on the effect of the changes to the student loan system.
