Tilburg Winter Symposium and Research Camp 2023 - Empowering Accounting with Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Accountancy at Tilburg University is proud to invite you to the Tilburg Winter Symposium and Research Camp on December 7-8, 2023.

The two-day event builds upon the long-standing tradition of the Tilburg Spring/Winter Camp and aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss emerging issues in the field of accounting and related disciplines. This year’s Symposium and Research Camp focuses on the theme Empowering Accounting with Artificial Intelligence. The event will begin at noon on Thursday, December 7, and conclude by 17:00 on Friday, December 8.

To enjoy this event, we kindly ask you to sign up before December 1 via the Registration event button below. The nonrefundable fee for registration is 99 euros (for PhD students 50 euros).  
The fee includes participation in the two-day conference, conference dinner, lunches, and morning and afternoon refreshments. Partial attendance is possible.

After registration, you will receive an e-mail with details about the payment of the fee.

Symposium on Thursday, December 7

The Symposium will be dedicated to two important themes: “Accountability in the age of Artificial Intelligence” and “Intelligence Augmented: Man and Machine in Interaction”.

"Accountability in the age of AI" brings together experts and industry leaders to explore the role of external reporting and assurance services in supporting accountability and ethical practices in AI deployment. Topics covered include regulatory changes affecting the field of AI, reporting and assurance challenges, and opportunities for accountable AI. 

The session on “Intelligence Augmented: Man and Machine in Interaction” unites experts to explore the necessary move from Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Intelligence Augmented (IA). Topics covered include the use of AI and advanced data analytics for more efficient and effective decision-making, process optimization, streamlining of routine tasks, and the benefits and challenges of human-AI collaboration.

  • 13:45 - 14:45      Panel discussion with Isabel Barberá (Rhite), Leon de Beer (KPMG), Angelique Koopman (EY), Theo-Jan Renkema (Rabobank/Tilburg University), and Dennis van de Wiel (Tidal Control/Tilburg University)                                                              
  • 14:45 - 15:15      Coffee break    

    Theme 2: Intelligence Augmented: Man and Machine in Interaction

  • 15:15 - 15:45      Introduction of and keynote speech by Klaus Möller (University of St. Gallen)               
  • 15:45 - 16:45      Panel discussion with Emile Aarts (Tilburg University), Dennis Campbell (Harvard Business School), Rob Huisman (Robeco), Sophie Kuijt (IBM), Merel Noorman (Tilburg University), and Maurice Op Het Veld (KPMG)
  • 16:45 - 17:00      Closing and walk to Faculty Club for drinks and dinner                            
  • 17:00 - 18:00      Drinks                                   
  • 18:00 - 20:30      Walking Buffet Dinner

Research Camp on Friday, December 8

The second day will bring together accounting researchers to share and discuss their latest research. We have received an incredible amount of high-quality submissions, making it hard to select! We are proud to announce a full agenda with exciting studies and networking opportunities.

PhD Breakfast on Friday, December 8

PhD students are invited to join us for a breakfast with the speakers of the Research Camp. If you would like to join us, please register before November 20 indicating your motivation and preference for the speaker you would like to meet. Capacity is limited. We will inform you by November 23. Please make sure to also register for the main event (see event registration).

Accommodation

Space in reasonable hotels in Tilburg is relatively limited, therefore, we urge you to arrange accommodation as soon as possible. Good hotels in Tilburg center are Mercure Hotel Tilburg Centrum and City Hotel Tilburg. Other hotels, not in the center, are Van der Valk Hotel Tilburg, Van der Valk Hotel Gilze, and Ibis Tilburg. To go from the city center of Tilburg to our campus, you can take the train/bus (5 minutes) or walk (about 50 minutes). If you are not staying in the center, you can take a taxi.
