Future of Work- Rethinking Workers’ Rights in the Digital Age
Juliana Londoño Polo presented an ongoing strand of her PhD Research that attempts a global mapping of Case Law, Social Dialogue and Legislative Reform Initiatives in the Platform Economy, providing insights into the present state of affairs, recognising the emergence of dominant trends, as well as their implications for the working conditions of this force.
Although workers’ mobilisation attempting to address the challenges derived from platform work arrangements date back to 2015, strategies which made use of institutional mechanisms -e.g. litigation, collective bargaining, legal reform- logically took longer to yield results vis-a-vis other forms of labour unrest such as protests, demonstrations or online forums.
Today, the outcomes of these workers’ strategies form a large and growing body of information, providing a unique opportunity to review the development of the platform economy, which is challenging our understanding of the meaning of work across the globe.
