TILT Seminar: Janneke van Oirschot (Health Action International) and Hannah van Kolfschooten (University of Amsterdam)

Abstract

AI applications are being developed at rapid speed for all areas of healthcare, but in particular in elderly care its implementation advances quickly. Of course, this does not come without risks to patient’s rights. As EU regulation is being developed and implemented, this seminar will look into the implications of the AI Act on patient rights, with a specific focus on its consequences for the elderly care setting and ethical and legal challenges at play in that particular context. Join us as we navigate the complex terrain of AI in elderly care and think along how we can ensure that advancements in technology uphold the dignity and rights of senior populations.

Janneke van Oirschot is research Officer at Health Action International (HAI), a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing policies that enable all people to realise the human right to the highest attainable level of health. Since 2021 she coordinates HAl’s AI programme aimed at protecting patient’s right in health AI. Areas of focus are the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, the European Health Data Space, and AI in elderly care in the Netherlands. In this role, Janneke is also the secretariat of the Digital Rights and Health Alliance, a civil society initiative that advocates for policies that prioritize transparency, accountability, and fairness in the use of algorithmic technology within healthcare. Janneke holds a Research Master in Global Health from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Hannah van Kolfschooten is a researcher and lecturer at the Law Centre for Health and Life (LCHL), University of Amsterdam. She is also a PhD fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) and affiliated member of the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG). The topic of her PhD research is EU regulation of algorithmic decision-making in public health and health care and focusses on safeguarding patients' rights. Hannah received a LL.M. in Health Law (cum laude, 2018) and a LL.M. in Information Law (cum laude, 2019) from the University of Amsterdam. Next to her research activities, she works as a consultant on medical AI regulation for HAI.
