PhD Defense M. Xie

The three essays collected in this Ph.D. thesis concern the effect of retirement on health and health utilization, and return to education. The first essay shows how the increased grandparental care provision induced by retirement explains the total impact of retirement on mental health. The second essay explores the heterogeneous returns to education from the perspective of the likelihood of obtaining an education. The third essay estimates the causal impact of retirement on health utilization beyond health status, which is the main outcome of interest in the literature.

Mingjia Xie (China, 1991) received a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Management at the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in 2013. He obtained his Master's degree in Finance at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in 2016 and his Master's degree in Economics at Tilburg University in 2018. After that, he joined the Department of Econometrics & OR at Tilburg University as a Ph.D. candidate.
