Archibald van Wieringen appointed Professor of Old Testament

Published: 07th June 2017 Last updated: 30th April 2019

PRESS RELEASE 7 June 2017 - Tilburg University has appointed Archibald L.H.M. van Wieringen as Professor of Old Testament as of May 1, 2017 at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology. His chair is located in the department of Biblical Science and Church History.

Next to teaching courses in Old Testament Exegesis and Biblical Hebrew, Archibald van Wieringen will be conducting research in the field of Old Testament texts. In the past few decades, he has been applying insights gained in textual communication to exegetical research. Every text has a reader present in it: how does this reader function in Old Testament texts? The answer to this question leads to new insights into the meaning, the origin and the reception of the Old Testament texts in question.

Within the Old Testament, his attention is primarily focused on prophetic texts, and more particularly on the Bible Book of Isaiah. He has published on this in prestigious journals, such as Revue Biblique and Biblica, and in multiple (conference) proceedings.

Professor Archibald van Wieringen (Amsterdam, 1963) studied theology in Amsterdam at the then Katholieke Theologische Hogeschool Amsterdam and in Nijmegen at the Catholic University (now called Radboud University), where he got his PhD with a thesis on computer-supported analysis of analogies in the Book of Isaiah. He has been affiliated to Tilburg University since 2009. Archibald van Wieringen is a priest of the Haarlem-Amsterdam diocese.
