PRESS RELEASE 14 December 2016 - As of November 1, 2016, Dr Kuno Huisman is Endowed Professor of Decision Making under Uncertainty at Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM) of Tilburg University. The chair has been established with the support of ASML.

Decision making always involves unpredictable factors that may impact on the preferred or forecasted outcome of a decision. High-tech companies such as ASML have to take decisions about, for example, substantial investments, and for them decision making under uncertainty is a key knowledge area: the innovative technology to be developed is uncertain, but so is the market. What are the spending patterns of consumers? How do new technological trends develop? When is an innovative development successful?

ASML and Tilburg University will work together in doing research on decision making under uncertainty. ASML aims to develop its expertise in this area and Tilburg University seeks to strengthen its research on this topic in the high-tech sector. The objective of the chair in Decision Making under Uncertainty is to improve the connection between theory and practice in this particular area. The scientific research will engage in both the practical application and the theoretical growth of real options theory and decision analysis.

Organizational placement

Organizationally, the ASML chair has been placed in the TiSEM Department of Econometrics and Operations Research. In addition to doing research, Professor Huisman will teach the Master’s programs Business Analytics and Operations Research, and Econometrics and Mathematical Economics. He is also involved in the Bachelor course Improving Society Lab.

Kuno Huisman studied Econometrics at Tilburg University. In 2000 he obtained his doctorate in Tilburg with his thesis Technology Investment: A Game Theoretic Real Options Approach. Before joining ASML in 2010, he worked for over 10 years as a consultant at CQM in Eindhoven. His current position at ASML is Director and Head of Business Change Support and Decision Support in the Presidents’ Office.
