TAISIG: new initiative that brings together all of Tilburg University's AI activities
25th January 2021Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a prominent role in today's digital society. It is therefore not surprising that AI is taking an increasingly important place in both academic research and education. At Tilburg University, a wide variety of scientists from all schools is involved in AI. In order to map and provide insight into what we do and what we are good at, TAISIG (Tilburg University AI Special Interest Group) was established.

Majority of managers reluctant to hire applicants with mental health problems
15th January 2021A new Tranzo survey of 670 executives in all Dutch sectors shows that a majority (64%) is reluctant to hire applicants with mental health problems. In addition, one in three managers would not quickly hire an employee who has ever had mental health problems, even if those problems are no longer an issue. The publication will soon be published in the renowned journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine (OEM).

Ico Maly: Solving digital illiteracy may be more important than restricting social media sites
14th January 2021The banning of groups from social media is not enough to fight the spreading of fake news and extremism, says researcher Ico Maly. It would be better to do research on the causes and to teach people how to learn to recognize misleading content. He particularly sees a role for the government here.

CoronaMelder: less used by young adults, intention to follow advice is high
13th January 2021Dr. ir. Nynke van de Laan has reported to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport on the evaluation of the CoronaMelder, an application with notifications of people close to you who are infected. Results are that especially young people and people not highly educated do not use the app often.

Janssen works for knowledge institution Het PON & Telos as a senior advisor and researcher in the field of sustainable regional development.

Pascal Böni appointed as Professor of Practice in Finance & Private Debt
11th January 2021Tilburg University has appointed Dr. Pascal Böni as Professor of Practice in Finance & Private Debt, effective January 1, 2021. Böni is the CEO of Remaco, a Swiss advisory and securities firm and member of Nexia International. He is also Associate Professor of Finance at TIAS, the business school of Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology. He will be the managing director of the newly established Tilburg Institute for Private Debt (TiPD), a joint initiative of the Departments of Accounting and Finance at Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM).

Large increase in loneliness but small decrease in mental health problems after the COVID-19 outbreak
11th January 2021Emotional loneliness among Dutch adults increased in the summer of 2020, compared to loneliness in November 2019 (from 18% to 25%). Among adults who were lonely after the COVID-19 outbreak but not lonely before the outbreak, the prevalence of mild to severe anxiety and depression symptoms also increased (from 18% versus 26%).

Michèle Nuijten: Top talent in the field of meta-research wins another big prize
21st December 2020Michèle Nuijten, meta-researcher at the Department of Methodoly and Statistics, is clearly a top talent in the scientific world. She wins one prize after another. December 18, she received the Young eScientist Award in the amount of € 50,000. Recently she received a Veni grant from NWO.
