During WW II, African American soldiers made England a less racist place, lasting until this day
29th June 2020Can racial prejudice be reduced or is it a constant of the human condition? And can interventions unfold effects that persist? Especially in light of recent events such as the Syrian refugee crisis, and more recently, the Black Lives Matter protests in the US, answers to these questions are desperately needed. In the long run, integration appears to have a positive effect on racial attitudes, which are passed on from generation to generation.

The Bundesliga & corona: Smashing the myth of home advantage
28th June 2020The German Bundesliga was the first European soccer league to resume play after the quarantine rules for the corona crisis were relaxed. The competition started again on May 16, without live spectators, after an interruption of more than two months. John Einmahl and Jan Magnus analyzed the data and concluded that home advantage disappears.

Educational innovators Tilburg University join ComeniusNetwork
25th June 2020The Comenius Network welcomes new members, including two lecturers from Tilburg University. Dr. Michael Bender and Dr. Marco Da Rin will join as Teaching Fellow for innovation projects in their education. The Comenius Network brings together acknowledged educational innovators to enhance higher education. Members of the network distinguish themselves by an appealing combination of the love for teaching and the way in which they put educational innovation into practice.

Social technology crucial for older adults in times of corona
23rd June 2020Elderly people, like everyone else, want to be seen and appreciated. They also have fundamental social needs, such as feeling connected, being independent and meaningful. Social technology can, certainly these days, play a large and valuable role in fulfilling those social needs, according to Tina ten Bruggencate in her dissertation (PhD Defence on July 2).

Lockdown research: working from home pays off!
20th June 2020The lockdown in the corona crisis is unintentionally the biggest working from home experiment ever. Recent research carried out by Tilburg University in collaboration with Veldhoen + Company shows that working from home pays off. People say that it fits in better with their own social preferences, that they can work more efficiently and have more control over their working day. The survey was conducted among 5,000 respondents from all over Europe.

Marije van der Lee appointed to Chair of Clinical Psycho-oncology
19th June 2020Marije van der Lee has been appointed extraordinary professor of Clinical Psycho-oncology at the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology at Tilburg University. The chair, entitled 'What works for whom in psycho-oncology', will be established by the Helen Dowling Institute (HDI), which aims to put psycho-oncological care on the map and on the academic agenda. The appointment took effect on 3 June and runs for five years.

15th June 2020Mirjam van Reisen, professor of International Relations, Innovation and Care, recently obtained three grants for her research, totalling € 2 million. The programmes focus on strengthening digital opportunities in Africa through capacity building and education.

Greedy CEOs invest less in corporate social responsibility and undermine their organization’s resilience
12th June 2020Organizations led by more greedy CEOs before the global financial crisis of 2008 suffered more severe consequences of that systemic shock. That is one of the main conclusions by organization scientists from Antwerp and Tilburg based on a recent study that will be published in the Journal of Management.

Pension benefits of the elderly insufficiently protected against interest rate fluctuations
08th June 2020Under the current Dutch pension contracts, the pension benefits of participants age 60 and older are inadequately protected against interest rate fluctuations. The current defined benefits agreement, moreover, offers insufficient possibilities for distributing interest rate risk between young and old in a desirable manner.
