A new force is emerging to champion the rights and well-being of students from all walks of academic life. FUST (Federal Union Students Tilburg) boasts a dynamic trio at its helm: Taylan Mete as Secretary, Nikola Novoselec as Treasurer, and Thijs Jansen as Chairman and Founder.

Representing every student in Tilburg

FUST’s vision extends beyond the confines of Tilburg University, aiming to represent every student in the city, including those from universities of applied sciences and institutions for senior secondary vocational education. As Taylan Mete explains, “We are heavily focusing on reaching out to the broader student community, ensuring that every student in Tilburg feels represented, regardless of their educational institution.” The young organization has already made significant strides in promoting its mission within Tilburg. Their strategy is centered around proactive advocacy that brings attention to student issues in society by engaging with the municipality, student organizations, and individuals. As Mete highlights: “Actions speak louder than words, and we have already initiated informational evenings, and much more.”

FUST

"FUST functions very differently on a fundamental level. We will be working together on student projects. We will not have our decisions and financial situation be dependent on the municipality."

Model for independence and impact

Internationalization is a core focus for FUST, with an international student on the board spearheading efforts. FUST nevertheless states that its primary focus is not exclusively on international students but recognizes the importance of internationalization. Both Jansen and Mete have prior experience in this area and aim to foster an inclusive environment for students from diverse backgrounds. Addressing concerns about independence and impact, Mete emphasizes FUST’s unique approach which differs from previous Student Council parties who have worked with the municipality. “FUST functions very differently on a fundamental level. We will be working together on student projects. We will not have our decisions and financial situation be dependent on the municipality.” This enables FUST to ensure that its decision-making and financial conditions remain independent. They thus prioritize a hands-on, association-driven approach, involving more students through working groups within their portfolios.

Policy initiatives for student welfare

FUST’s policy priorities are rooted in the diverse needs of the student community. “Our main focus lies in key portfolios such as Student Well-being, Internationalization, Diversity, and Housing,” states Mete. “However, we also aim to address issues such as Infrastructure, Education, Student city, Visibility, and Poverty” – recognizing the complexity of student life and the need for comprehensive representation. In addition to their policy initiatives, FUST has already established a legal service, staffed by law students eager to assist their peers. Mete affirms: “For now we are starting small and we will be adjusting based on demand. We are also in contact with the legal services of the LSVb (an advocacy organization for all students in the Netherlands), who have multiple years of legal experience with regard to government matters.”
