"How could I know what I want if I say yes to everything?”

Therese Belivet is a young woman working as a clerk in a Manhattan department store when she meets Carol Aird, an alluring, married older woman. Their initial encounter sparks an immediate connection that evolves as they embark on a journey of profound discovery. As Carol breaks free from the shackles of her marriage, her husband begins to question her abilities as a mother, further complicated by her deepening involvement with Therese.

Based on a 1952 romance novel, Carol explores the complexities of desire, self-discovery, and the courage to pursue one’s authentic self. With captivating performances and exquisite cinematography, this is a timeless tale of passion and resilience in the face of adversity.

Awards

After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2015, Carol ended up being both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Praised for the direction, as well as Blanchett and Mara’s performances, Carol garnered plenty of awards and nominations. It went on to receive 6 Academy Award nominations (incl. Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress). It was named the best LGBT film of all time by the British Film Institute in 2016.

‘’You leave the film's soft-grained world reluctantly, as if taking off a warm coat when it's still a little chilly inside.’’
–Seattle Times

‘’I went into a trance watching it - and haven't quite surfaced, even now.’’
–Guardian
