“Put on a happy face.”

Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks - the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

Known previously mostly from comedies, director Todd Philips presents a film that gives its infamous central character a chillingly plausible origin story that serves as a brilliant showcase for its star – and a dark evolution for comics-inspired cinema. With an amazing performance by Joaquin Phoenix, stunning cinematography, and soundtrack some call it the best movie of the 21st century.

At the same time, it is also a controversial movie; Joker deals with many thematically disturbing elements — mental health, political violence, and an “incel”-like protagonist.

Awards

Joker premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation and won the Golden Lion award. Joker won the Best Actor and Best Original Score awards at the 92nd Academy Awards. It received overall eleven nominations (including Best Picture) from the ceremony, breaking the record of eight held by The Dark Knight for the most nominations received by a film based on a comic book. Hildur Guðnadóttir also became the first woman to win an original score Oscar since The Full Monty in 1998. Joaquin Phoenix's performance in the film won him multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actor, a BAFTA, a Critics' Choice Movie Award, a Golden Globe and a SAG.
