Mobility

Tilburg University is committed to reducing its mobility CO2 footprint. Research has shown that a large part of our CO2 footprint originates in the daily commute of our growing workforce and student population. We want to realize a 75% reduction around 2030 and ultimately achieve 100% clean mobility.

This will contribute to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:

  • affordable and clean energy (7),
  • industry, innovation and infrastructure (9),
  • sustainable cities and communities (11),
  • climate action (13).

We are therefore making a concerted effort to make sustainable choices concerning our commuter or student traffic and for business trips. In addition, we want to minimize the burden of parking facilities. We also want the campus to remain a green and attractive environment for all its users.

We focus on:

Reducing car use

Tilburg University wants to stimulate the use of more sustainable alternatives for commuting and for business trips, thus reducing car use. One important step in reducing car use is promoting and expanding the possibilities of hybrid working. This means that employees work partly from home and partly on campus or elsewhere. As a result of the COVID-19 crisis, we have quickly gained a lot of experience with this, although not always in regular condition. We want to continue to benefit from the advantages we have experienced. The university is anticipating this development and has set up a scheme for hybrid working. This is also expected to relieve parking pressure on and around the campus.

Ride sharing

We kindly request all visitors to travel to the campus via sustainable modes of transportation. Or to share rides as much as possible. Ride sharing apps are available for carpooling to and from the campus.

Encouraging bicycle use

In 2021, Tilburg University introduced a broader bicycle scheme for employees. Via the Options Model, employees can make use of various schemes, as a stimulus to come to the campus by bicycle or e-bike. Bikes can be parked in different places on the campus in the available bike parks. This helps to maintain an orderly campus and keeps buildings and premises accessible to everyone.

For safety reasons, it is not recommended that you charge batteries for e-bikes inside the buildings

Electric cars

The supply and use of electric cars is increasing. Our campus is also equipped to charge the cars of employees, students and visitors who have gone electric.

On and around the campus, there are 40 charging points for electric cars to facilitate and stimulate the use of electric cars by employees and visitors

Sustainable business trips

As a Tilburg University employee, you may need to participate, to a greater or lesser extent, in meetings, conferences, and symposiums at home or abroad. We offer various options to do so online as much as possible.

In that case, we stimulate the use of sustainable modes of transport, e.g., a bike or public transport. Per organizational unit, anonymous mobility cards (NS business cards) are available to use on public transport.

Traveling greater distances
As regards business meetings at a greater distance, we kindly request you to consider in what sustainable way you can make the journey. Up to a distance of 500 km, you travel as sustainably as possible. There are also cities more than 500 km away that can be reached in a sustainable way, taking into account traveling time/duration and convenience.
