Smoke-free campus

Tilburg University is completely smoke-free. This means that smoking is prohibited everywhere on the campus premises. The ban includes e-cigarettes and other tobacco-free smoking products and applies to everyone: students, staff, visitors, and suppliers. In this way, we create a healthy and sustainable working and studying environment together.

Smoking outside the campus

The map below shows the campus boundaries. You can also find them here. There are signs pointing out the non-smoking policy and indicating where you leave or enter the campus. If you smoke a cigarette just outside the campus, please extinguish it and and throw the butt in the green so-called voting ashtrays (see picture) to prevent littering around the campus boundaries.

Enforcing the smoke-free zones

In compliance with the Dutch Tobacco and Related Products Act (Tabaks- en rookwarenwet), a smoking ban is in force inside and directly around all Dutch educational institutions. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit, NVWA) is competent to monitor compliance with the smoking ban on the campus. If the smoking ban is infringed (see the Tilburg University House Rules), fines may be imposed. In addition to enforcing the smoking ban, Tilburg University thinks it is important to enter into a dialogue with people who infringe the ban. Please give feedback to each other on the subject because keeping the campus healthy and smoke-free is something we do together.
