I did my PhD in developmental psychopathology at the VU University Amsterdam, examining the development and adjustment outcomes of mood variability during adolescence using daily diary data (2014-2016). In my first postdoc at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, I examined neurobiological determinants of adolescent psychopathology (2016). In my second postdoc at Amsterdam UMC and Erasmus MC, I was project coordinator of a large-scale project for children of parents with mood disorders (the Mood And Resilience In Offspring (MARIO) project; 2017-2019). After my post-docs, I realized that my heart lies at the dynamics of emotions and the regulation thereof, which is why I moved to Radboud University as an assistant professor and mainly focused on emotion (regulation) dynamics in daily life (2019-2023). I joined the department of developmental psychology of Tilburg in May 2023 and hope to better understand in the future why my emotions are so variable, whereas my partner is chill all the time.
My main research aim is to study the role of emotion (regulation) dynamics in mental health in young people. I want to understand why individuals differ from each other in how they regulate their emotions, in what contexts variability in emotions is adaptive and what role emotion (regulation) dynamics play in mental health. I also examine the effectiveness of just-in-time adaptive interventions to improve emotion regulation and mental health. To this end, I use Experience Sampling Methods (ESM) to measure how emotions and emotion regulation unfold dynamically in daily life (for two recent examples see https://osf.io/fx3ay/; https://osf.io/9axte/). Additionally, I focus on methodological issues in ESM research. To stimulate that research line, I am part of an international consortium aiming to improve the validity of measurements in ESM research (https://osf.io/m2v38/) and have just received a Dutch grant to study response processes in ESM studies.
In the past, I have mostly taught developmental psychopathology and statistics, but also intervention science and methods. I have supervised bachelor, master and PhD students and really enjoy the mentoring process and learning new things myself from supervision.
