Situated in the fictional nation of Zubrowka, The Grand Budapest Hotel is a world-renowned hotel, managed by Monsieur Gustave H. He is an eccentric concierge, known to seduce old, wealthy clients. After Madame D., a hotel regular with whom he has had a two-decade-long affair mysteriously dies, he becomes the leading suspect in her murder. Gustave H. befriends a young employee, Zero, and together they embark on an adventure to free the concierge of blame
This hilarious comedy explores the themes of friendship and nostalgia, using color to accentuate the film’s tones, emphasize the subject matter, and showcase the passage of time. It is Wes Anderson’s most commercially successful, and critically acclaimed, piece to date.
Awards
The Grand Budapest Hotel premiered in 2014 at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. It received universal acclaim, with critics praising its direction, acting, cinematography, production design, costumes, make-up, and score. It received 9 Academy Award nominations, incl. Best Picture and Best Director, winning four. At the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, it won the award for the Best Film – Musical or Comedy, while being nominated for three other awards.
