Thesis Award for research on cultural omnivores: “Cultural taste says a lot about your social position”
23rd June 2023Master’s student of Sociology Romy Oomens has won the Mens & Maatschappij Master’s Thesis Award with her study of the phenomenon of ‘cultural omnivorism’. Her study will be published in the academic journal of the same name. Romy investigated whether educational level and intergenerational mobility cause people to develop a more exclusive or, on the contrary, a broader cultural taste.

21st June 2023At the kick-off symposium of the Academic Collaborative Center for Digital Health & Mental Wellbeing on 13 June, scientists and social partners together took a significant step in the development of a cooperation agenda for the Center. The bottom-up approach, in which co-creation is used to decide what research questions should receive attention, is characteristic of the working method adopted by the University-wide Academic Collaborative Centers.

Tilburg University’s reaction to the Parliamentary debate on Internationalization
21st June 2023Dutch MPS are greatly worried about the fast growing numbers of international students studying in the Netherlands and the impact on, among other things, the availability of student accommodation and on Dutch as an academic language. Tilburg University wants to emphasize that our international community is a valued and integral part of our community. We agree that it is a good thing to encourage informed decisions on the use of English as a language of instruction. We call on everybody who is worried to share these concerns with their supervisors.

Paulina Snijders talks about Untangling and Unburdening: ‘We want to see a shift from control to trust’
19th June 2023With its Untangling and Unburdening program, Tilburg University is waging war against unnecessary rules and procedures. Changing the behavior that is causing the bureaucracy will still prove difficult and take time, believes Paulina Snijders, but it must be possible. “If we’re successful in making significant progress this year, things can begin to accelerate. It will initiate a flywheel effect.”
