I studied legal science at the Kathlolieke Hogeschool Tilburg, the precursor of the present Tilburg University. After I concluded my study in 1986, I became a member of the department Legal History. Being a researcher as well as a lecturer I defended my thesis Beledigingszaken voor de Staatse Raad van Brabant 1586-1795 in 1996. Nowadays I am teaching European Legal History (bachelor course) and History of Criminal Law and History of Tax Law (both master courses). Over the years I have published several books regarding the History of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedural Law, most recently Rabauwen, vagebonden en lediggangers. Criminele voorouders berecht en bestraft (2017) and Aanklagen onder de rivieren (2018). I contributed chapters to some international volumes on the field of criminality and justice and wrote a great number of essays on various topics having to do with the historical evolution of (criminal) law in The Netherlands.
