Bio

Mariek Vanden Abeele is a communication scientist studying the social implications of mobile media from both media psychological and media sociological perspectives. She is appointed as Associate Professor in Online Culture in both the department of Cognition and Communication and the department of Culture Studies.

Mariek's research interests include digital wellbeing, the impact of co-present phone use on social interactions ('phubbing'), mobile youth culture, the social implications of self-tracking technologies (incl. wearables), and the role of mobile media in parent-child relationships.  Her work has been published in journals such as New Media & Society, Media Psychology, Computers in Human Behavior

Mariek is steering member of the International Communication Association’s Mobile Interest Group and member of Mobile Media & Communication’s editorial board.
