The Government Committee on Demographic Developments 2050, together with the Academic Collaborative Centers of the Program for Broad Prosperity of Tilburg University and other experts in the region, paid working visits to Brainport Eindhoven and City Region Parkstad Limburg. The purpose of the working visits was to identify societal issues in the region and assess them in the context of broad prosperity.

Social Consequences of Aging and Migration

The Government Committee on Demographic Developments has been tasked by the government to examine possible scenarios up to the year 2050. The committee looks at the social consequences of population changes, particularly the effects of aging and migration. They assess these scenarios in the context of the broad wellbeing approach, which means that, in addition to the economic consequences of changes, they also look at aspects such as wellbeing, livability, and sustainability. By the end of January 2024, the committee will issue its advice to the government.

Brainport Eindhoven

On Monday, September 11, the Government Committee on Demographic Developments visited the Brainport Industries Campus in Eindhoven together with Joks Janssen and Otto Raspe of the Academic Collaborative Center for Governance and Management for Broad Prosperity, the Eindhoven Municipality, and VDL. Brainport Eindhoven, as a region has a great impact in the field of technology and innovations and strives to be a great place to live, work, and play. Subject of discussion was the role of aging, migration, and labor productivity in the context of a rapidly growing economically thriving region.

"We had an extensive exchange of views on how to (manage) broad prosperity in times of scarcity of energy, space, and labor. The discussion was mainly about how the national government can put the region(s) in a good position, based on the idea that the region is the ideal scale for integrative work."
Joks Janssen, Professor of Practice of Broad Prosperity at Tilburg University and senior advisor-researcher at Het PON & Telos

City Region Parkstad Limburg

After the visit to Brainport Eindhoven, a working visit to the South Limburg region of Parkstad took place later that week on Friday, Sept. 15. This region is an administrative partnership of seven municipalities in Limburg. The Board is supported by an independent agency with a team working on the transformation and future of the region and the people who live there. Preserving facilities and talent and stimulating new economic activities and knowledge development plays a major role in this context. Ton Wilthagen of the Tilburg University Academic Collaborative Center for an Inclusive Labor Market was present as well as several representatives of the region and the province of Limburg. Visits were made to the Westhoes in Kerkrade and the Brightlands Smart Services Campus in Heerlen.

"Parkstad is a resilient region that is working determinedly on enhancing broad prosperity."
Ton Wilthagen, full professor of Labor Market at Tilburg University
