Medals

Under the term medals in modern times, one mainly counts specially designed coins without a fixed value. They are often produced as commemorative or artistic objects or to express appreciation for people of special merit.

For example, until its incorporation in 2007, the Theologische Faculteit Tilburg, which merged into the faculteit Geesteswetenschappen, had its own medal of honor, which was awarded to individuals who had shown special merit to the institution. On the front, the medal depicts an anchor cross with two fish, a symbol of hope and salvation. The fish represent the Christian community, who read the letters of the Greek word for fish, "ichtus," as Ièsos Christos theou huios sootèr (Jesus Christ Son of God, Savior).

The medal in the display case was presented to Lecturer of Philosophy Piet Leenhouwers, on his retirement in 1994. Leenhouwers was one of the forerunners in the founding of the faculty and also an endowed professor of philosophy at the Technical University in Eindhoven.

The medal was designed by Jos Reniers, who also designed the KUB medal for the university in 1982. It symbolizes the learning community, with a professor on the left, students on the right, and the book at the bottom. The KUB medal was made financially possible by the Friends of Cobbenhagen, the alumni association of Tilburg University. It is noteworthy that the name of the institution on the reverse of the medal is in Latin: Universitas Catholica Tilburgiensis.
