New series of Junior University lectures kicks off
26th October 2023On October 25, a new series of Junior University lectures, an initiative of Tilburg University Junior, kicked off with an inspirational lecture on social media and influencers. In a packed lecture hall, no fewer than 530 children aged 9 to 12 experienced what it feels like to be university students. Through such lectures, children are introduced to science and learn about the impact research has on their lives.

Tilburg University participated in knowledge mission to South Africa
23rd October 2023Outgoing Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf led a delegation of 21 leading Dutch education organizations on a knowledge mission to South Africa from October 14 to 18. In addition to Ministry officials, administrators of secondary vocational education institutions, universities of applied sciences, research universities, and umbrella organizations participated in the knowledge mission. On behalf of Tilburg University, Vice-Rector Magnificus Jantine Schuit joined the knowledge mission.

What are the real effects of climate-related disclosures?
23rd October 2023Policymakers set standards for firms’ reporting on climate-related matters to enable market participants to factor in risks, instill discipline and encourage firms to adopt cleaner practices. However, the costs and benefits of these rules are not entirely clear. Lucas Mahieux, Haresh Sapra and Gaoqing Zhang study the real effects of mandated disclosures. Their key policy recommendation is that disclosure requirements should not be set in isolation but coordinated globally.

Tilburg University and The Foodbank join forces to lower barriers to food aid
18th October 2023Around 180,000 people in our country receive support from the Dutch association for food banks. Although these figures illustrate that many individuals can find their way to food banks, estimates suggest that a far greater number of citizens qualify for such aid. In a collaborative effort, Tilburg University and Food Banks Netherlands are working together to lower the barriers to accessing food banks.

International Open Access Week 2023 – Workshop "Unlocking Open Access Book Publishing with Open Press”
12th October 2023To celebrate the importance and set the commitment to open access, the Library Research Support team is organizing a special World Café workshop titled "Unlocking Open Access Book Publishing with Open Press”. This workshop will provide the Tilburg University research community a hands-on opportunity to explore open access book publishing and community-driven initiatives through Open Press Tilburg University.

Springer cap agreement expected to be reached in the end of October 2023
12th October 2023The agreement between Dutch Universities and Springer Nature for the period 2018-2023 covers a yearly maximum of 2067 articles per year. This agreement has allowed publishing open access in 2,000 hybrid journals at no cost to the author.

Wim van de Donk to be presented with Visser-Neerlandia Award on October 13
12th October 2023As King’s Commissioner for the province of North Brabant, Professor Wim van de Donk worked to strengthen collaboration between North Brabant and Flanders. In recognition of this achievement, the ANV (Algemeen Nederlands Verbond) will present him with the annual Visser-Neerlandia Award in Leuven on October 13.

Gerard van den Berg appointed to Tilburg University Board of Governors
11th October 2023Professor Gerard van den Berg has been appointed to the Board of Governors of Tilburg University as of October 1, 2023. Van den Berg is a professor at the University of Groningen (RUG) and the Groningen University Medical Center (UMCG). The Board of Governors monitors the objectives of the university and functions as its supervisory council.

Consortium receives NWO subsidy for research on more effective treatment of depression
04th October 2023Depression is the leading cause of disability. Patients receive treatment on a trial-and-error basis because it is unknown which treatment will benefit a patient. The BOOST Depression consortium will use artificial intelligence to develop biomarkers that can predict treatment outcome and guide the selection of the best treatment for each patient.
