2010: New name and a new logo

1992-2010

  • 1992
    • Opening of the new High Tech library, now known as Library & IT-Services (LIS), with 900 study places and 450 PCs. It is the first library in the world designed with digitalization in mind. There is so much interest in the concept that courses and summer schools are organized for it.
    • Founding of "Friends of Cobbenhagen," the university's alumni association.
    • The Warande Building opens; an educational building with only lecture halls.
  • 1993
    • Opening of the Meditation Center (Stiltecentrum), later called Zwijsen Building. ). It is intended for reflection and debate for all denominations, as an expression of what is called “open catholicity.”
  • 1994
    • Establishment of the Nexus Institute, affiliated with the university until 2017, they organize lectures.
    • Start of profiling as 'university for humanities and social sciences'
  • 1995
    • Former Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers is appointed part-time full professor of Globalization (until 2001).
    • 85 international (exchange) students from 15 countries.

  • 1997
    • Former Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Ms. Yvonne van Rooy is the first woman on the Executive Board (president, until 2004).
    • Opening of the Dante Building. This was originally envisioned for the Law School.
  • 1998
    • Opening of the student center (Esplanade Building).  It contains workspaces for all study associations, spaces for debate and culture, and a grand café.
  • 1999
    • Prof. Frank van der Duyn Schouten, econometrician, becomes Protestant Rector Magnificus, longest serving in history of the university (until 2008).
    • University Government (Modernization) Act (Wet modernisering universitaire bestuursorganisatie (MUB)).
  • 2000
    • percentage [MB1] were women (TiSEM 3,331, TLS 2,369, TSB 2,172, Arts 493, Philosophy 129).
  • 2001
    • Name is changed to "University of Tilburg" (UvT).
    • The "open Catholicism" takes shape in the establishment of the Center for Science and Values (Centrum voor Wetenschap en Levensbeschouwing (CWL)) and Stiltecentrum.
  • 2002
    • In the year of the university's 75th anniversary, the number of enrolled students rises above 10,000 for the first time. Among them are 400 international students, 300 of whom are on exchange.
    • English-taught programs start: International Business (IB) and International Economics and Finance (IEF) and Business Studies (BS).
    • Kofi Annan (UN Secretary-General) receives honorary doctorate in the presence of HM Queen Beatrix.
    • Establishment of the Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC).
    • Former full professor Cees Veerman becomes Minister of Agriculture in the Balkenende I Cabinet.
  • 2003
    • Prof. Lans Bovenberg receives the Spinoza Prize.

  • 2005
    • Establishment of the Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging and Retirement (Netspar).
    • Establishment of the International Victimology Institute Tilburg (INTERVICT).
  • 2006
    • Ruud Lubbers (Minister of State, CDA) takes office as Chair of the Board of Governors (until 2014).
    • TIAS Business School merges with the business school Nimbas in Utrecht.
  • 2007
    • Establishment of the Tilburg School of Humanities (merger Philosophy, Communication, Arts).
    • The Tilburg School of Catholic Theology (TST) is founded, following a merger between the Catholic Theological University in Utrecht and the Tilburg Theological Faculty.
  • 2008
    • Prof. Philip Eijlander, full professor of law, becomes Rector Magnificus (until 2015).
    • Establishment of the Center of Research on Psychology in Somatic diseases (CoRPS).
    • Establishment of the Tilburg Center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC).

  • 2009
    • Prof. dr. Wim van de Donk, full professor of social administration, becomes King’s/Queen’s Commissioner in North Brabant. In 2020, he would become President and Rector Magnificus of the university.
