Program and courses Organizing and Managing Digital Transformation track

The multidisciplinary approach of this program on digitalization gives you unique knowledge and skills. You gain an in-depth understanding of organizational forms and concepts in the evolving landscape of work and organizations. You will learn how to diagnose organizational issues, formulate research-based solutions, communicate these effectively with relevant stakeholders, and manage the implementation processes. The program builds on an interdisciplinary social sciences perspective.

Program structure

This one-year Master's program consists of 60 credits (ECTS):

  • 3 core courses of Organizing and Managing Digital Transformation (12 ECTS)
  • 4 core courses of Organization and Management Studies (21 ECTS)
  • 1 Master’s Seminar in Organization and Management Studies (3 ECTS)
  • Master’s thesis (24 ECTS)

This program starts at the end of August.

You will follow three track-specific courses. The other courses belong to the 'Organization and Management' Master’s program. The Master’s thesis focuses on digitalization in the evolving landscape of work and organizations.

In this Master's program, you will have lectures, seminars, group assignments, presentations, case studies, and research papers. You will also take part in six workshops with topics ranging from Artificial Intelligence to Product Management.

Program content

Block 1: August – October
  • Organizing Strategy & Entrepreneurship

    Focus on organizations and their strategies, and develop a serious game based on a question brought in by a client organization.

  • Evidence Based Interventions

    Learn how organizational change and evidence-based actions are crucial to mold organizations to the needs of complex, multi-factor, multi-stakeholder environments, characterized by high dynamism and sudden shocks.

  • Introduction to Digital Transformation in Society and Organizations

    Gain theoretical knowledge about what digital transformation is and on its significance for organizations. Learn the defining characteristics of digital transformation and what impact they have on a societal, organizational, and product level.

Block 2: October – January
  • Inter-organizational Relationships

    You will learn about inter-organizational relations and their crucial roles in various forms. These relationships can take form as a collaboration between local entrepreneurs and established firms as well as public-private partnerships. 

  • Organizational Dynamics

    Focus on the theoretical and methodological approaches that enable the dynamic evaluation of organizations. You will develop and present an intervention in teams for a client organization.

  • Master’s Seminar Organization and Management Studies            

    This Master’s seminar prepares you for your Master’s thesis, which will focus on a track-related topic.

  • Managing Digital Transformation in Organizations

    Learn how to implement and analyze the impact of new digital technologies. Understand and craft strategic choices related to digitalization. Explore how digital transformation can be managed within and across organizations.

Block 3: January – April
  • Capstone: Digital Transformation Case Project

    Put your knowledge into practice by participating in a multi-day project based on challenges provided by a company partner. You and your team will work together to address client needs and present your final plans and recommendations to the firm.

In the second half of the Master's program, you will write your Master's thesis, supervised by a member of the department, and supported by your fellow students in Thesis Circles. 

Thesis Circles

During the Master's thesis project, you will be assigned to a Thesis Circle consisting of a small group of students with similar research themes, supervised by one or more knowledgeable member(s) of the department. In this circle, individual research results are presented and discussed, and you give and receive feedback to and from your fellow students.

  • Emerging and shifting professional roles for digital transformation
  • Digital transformation in healthcare organizations
  • Algorithms, AI and Organizations
  • Intrafirm networks and innovation
  • Problems of organizing between organizations
  • Organizing regional resilience

Extend your Master's with an internship

You have the opportunity to do an Extended Master’s to deepen your knowledge and skills. In the Extended Master’s program Organizing and Managing Digital Transformation, you will extend your Master's program by half a year, in which you do an internship (30 ECTS) in Dutch or English.

During the internship, you will dedicate half your time to research activities in the internship organization, and half your time researching and writing your Master's thesis.

After completing the internship, you will receive a professional certificate in addition to your MSc. This extensive experience will boost your position in the job market.

A short overview of the Organizing and Managing Digital Transformation track

  • This track has a multi-disciplinary approach with insights from Organization and Management Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Governance, Law, and Digital Sciences. 
  • Take part in an innovative program that utilizes serious gaming and implements practical teamwork to learn and identify organizational challenges related to digital transformation.
  • Receive small-scale, interactive education from experts in the field and support from fellow students through Thesis Circles.
  • This track offers a practical orientation via workshops with external experts to understand technologies that have the potential to highly impact businesses.
