Working visit ministers on importance of work for people with mental illness
23rd January 2023On Monday, January 23, Minister Carola Schouten (Poverty, Participation and Pensions) and Minister Conny Helder (Long-term Care and Sports) paid a working visit to mental health institution Reakt. During the working visit they discussed at length the importance of good support in getting people with mental vulnerability into work. Both employees and employers were given the space to share their experiences. Dr. Kim Janssens, researcher at Tranzo - Tilburg University, gave scientific support on the importance of work for people with mental vulnerability.

Tilburg University awards first micro-credentials
26th January 2023Tilburg University last week awarded its first micro-credentials to professionals who successfully completed the course Taalwetenschap (Linguistics). Micro-credentials play a key role in Lifelong Development, a centerpiece in Tilburg University's strategy.

Tilburg University joins the Netherlands Energy Research Alliance
02nd February 2023Tilburg University has joined NERA, the Netherlands Energy Research Alliance, to strengthen cooperation with other universities and knowledge institutions in the field of energy research. This cooperation fits into Tilburg University's broader strategy to stimulate research on climate change and energy issues from the social sciences and humanities.

Jelle Kanters wins Jan Brouwer Thesis Award for master's thesis on Tax Administration
14th February 2023Jelle Kanters, master's student in Tax Law, has won the Jan Brouwer Thesis Award for his thesis 'Selection at whose risk? An investigation into the formal law consequences of risk selection by the Tax Authorities'. In it, he shows that the legal protection of taxpayers is being eroded ever so slightly.

Otto Raspe appointed as Professor of Practice of Broad Prosperity and the Regional Economy
01st March 2023On March 1, 2023, Tilburg University appointed Dr. Otto Raspe as Professor of Practice at the Academic Collaborative Center of Broad Prosperity. Raspe has been appointed for 0.1 FTE, his teaching and research remit being Broad Prosperity and the Regional Economy.

Tilburg University to collaborate intensively in the region for Broad Prosperity
14th March 2023The government has pledged € 12.5 million as part of a regional deal to invest in central Brabant for improving the quality of the living and working environment of both residents and entrepreneurs. The money is intended to give a major boost to Broad Prosperity in our region.

Theo Camps’ Valedictory Address: Close Relationship between House and Cabinet Prevents Officials from Speaking Freely
16th March 2023An overly close relationship between coalition factions in the Dutch House of Representatives and cabinet makes it impossible for officials to give ethical advice. So, Prof. dr. Theo Camps will conclude in his valedictory address on March 17, 2023.

Tilburg University has moved into new MindLabs building
17th March 2023At the end of January, the new MindLabs building was completed and it is now being fitted out. In the week of March 27, Tilburg University took possession of the building, situated in the heart of hipster hotspot Spoorzone. The four shared labs on the ground floor will be managed by the university. On the first floor, office space and three lecture halls will be available to Tilburg University.

Erik-Jan Broers ends up in the last four in the national Teacher of the Year 2023 election
25th April 2023What an achievement! Erik-Jan Broers has made it to the final four in the national final of the Teacher of the Year election. Sadly not a first place, but absolutely a big achievement to be proud of.

Board member Paulina Snijders to exchange Tilburg for Groningen
25th April 2023Paulina Snijders has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), effective September 1, 2023. She will be responsible for the portfolios of Finance, Real Estate, ICT, and Digital Transformation.

Remembrance ceremony for students at Tilburg University’s war memorial
04th May 2022On the occasion of the Remembrance of the Dead, Henk Witte, acting Dean of the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology, laid flowers on behalf of the Tilburg University Executive Board at the war memorial commemorating the twenty-two Tilburg students who lost their lives during the Second World War. The memorial, consisting of a memorial wall with photos and candles, is located in Cobbenhagen Building.

Tilburg University response to BSA bill
17th May 2023Last week, Minister of Education Robbert Dijkgraaf announced his plans to modify the binding study advice (BSA). As of the academic year 2025-2026, students need only secure 30 out of 60 credits in their first year to be allowed to continue their studies. This effectively eases the BSA, and universities believe this move to be both undesirable and unwise.

SSH signs Tilburg Student Housing Covenant
22nd May 2023Tilburg, May 22, 2023 - SSH Student Housing has signed the Student Accommodation Covenant of the City of Tilburg. Given the great shortage of student accommodation in Tilburg, SSH wants to realize hundreds of extra units for students. The focus will be on affordable student rooms.

Winners Tilburg University Challenge 2023
25th May 2023The 2023 Tilburg University Challenge was awarded on May 23 to three innovative business plans by student teams. During the finals, the Ideation Award went to Giulio Tosato, Cesare Maria Dalbagno and Francesco Fumagalli of BCI-magicians. The Business Ready Award went to Sven Correia of myTofu. The Audience Award was won by Krzysztof Trzebinski and Jakub Janczak of Thirsty Sustainable Clothing.

Thesis Award for research on cultural omnivores: “Cultural taste says a lot about your social position”
23rd June 2023Master’s student of Sociology Romy Oomens has won the Mens & Maatschappij Master’s Thesis Award with her study of the phenomenon of ‘cultural omnivorism’. Her study will be published in the academic journal of the same name. Romy investigated whether educational level and intergenerational mobility cause people to develop a more exclusive or, on the contrary, a broader cultural taste.

Jean-Claude Laprie Prize 2023 for paper reliable computing systems for Dean Haverkort
30th June 2023Dean of the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences Boudewijn Haverkort, together with co-authors, received the Jean-Claude Laprie Award in Porto on June 29. The award ceremony took place during the annual IFIP/IEEE Congress on Dependable Systems & Networks.

European Universities Alliance ENGAGE.EU receives follow-up grant
03rd July 2023The European Commission has announced that ENGAGE.EU is to receive a follow-up grant to the amount of € 14.4 million for further elaborating the mobility and collaboration among the nine participating European universities. The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science supports Tilburg University’s efforts with an additional € 1 million.

Tilburg University and the City of Tilburg develop joint broad prosperity research program
11th July 2023On July 11, 2023, Tilburg University and the City of Tilburg have adopted a roadmap for a co-creative research program in the field of broad prosperity in the local communities and broad prosperity in business. This research program is part of the agreement between the City and the university to take cooperation to an even higher level. For instance, the parties contribute to Tilburg Kennisstad and to the movement to help the city-with-a-university develop into a proper university city.

Dutch universities to take different approach to rankings
11th July 2023The Dutch universities will take a more critical stance towards global university ranking. These so-called league tables have methodological shortcomings and their assessment of the research achievements of universities is too one-sided, being merely based on the number of publications and citations. This is at odds with the Recognition & Rewards program, through which Dutch universities emphasize quality rather than quantity. This is the conclusion of an expert group advising the Board of Universities of the Netherlands (UNL).

Royal honor awarded to Professor Emeritus Sylvester Eijffinger
13th July 2023On Wednesday, July 12, Sylvester Eijffinger was made an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau in his home town of Oisterwijk. Mayor Hans Janssen conferred this royal honor on him.

Tilburg University achieves 79% of its Employment Target
27th July 2023One of the action lines set out in the Dutch Universities’ Employment Targets Roadmap (Werkagenda Banenafspraak Nederlandse Universiteiten) is that universities show, in a qualitative and quantitative manner, what efforts they have made to achieve the objectives of the Employment Target.
Last year, Tilburg University achieved 79% of its jobs target. This puts Tilburg University ahead of the other universities in the Netherlands.

Prestigious awards for research on communication behavior in medical teams
09th August 2023In the Netherlands, patient treatment plans are mostly discussed within medical multidisciplinary teams, in which medical physicians collectively formulate treatment recommendations. According to award winning new research by organizational psychologist Margo Janssens, these teams would benefit from taking more time to discuss patients' background information and problems, the so-called initial orientation phase.

Team collaboration in a game of Tetris: A Lowlands science experiment
23rd August 2023Researchers from TSB (the Departments of Human Resource Studies and Medical & Clinical Psychology) conducted research this past weekend at a sweltering hot Lowlands Science site on how effectively people work together in a team. They asked visitors of the Lowlands music festival to play a game of Tetris under different conditions. A unique opportunity to do research in a very dynamic environment.

04th September 2023Anke Liefbroer was named Tilburg University's Teach of the Year 2023 during the Opening of the Academic Year. Anke teaches the courses Sociology & Psychology of Religion, and Pastoral Care & Psychopathology at our theological faculty (TST).

21st September 2023Universities of the Netherlands (UNL) has responded to the government’s Balanced Internationalization bill. While UNL is satisfied with the control instruments included in the bill, it is deeply concerned about the feasibility of a number of the proposed measures, such as the language measures.

EAIE Award for Hans-Georg van Liempd
27th September 2023Hans-Georg van Liempd, Secretary of Tilburg University and Director of University Services, received the Award for Outstanding Contribution from the European Association for International Education (EAIE). This award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Association’s work and to the international education sector. According to the EAIE there is little doubt the education sector is in a stronger position for the generous time and knowledge Hans-Georg has shared over his career.

Gerard van den Berg appointed to Tilburg University Board of Governors
11th October 2023Professor Gerard van den Berg has been appointed to the Board of Governors of Tilburg University as of October 1, 2023. Van den Berg is a professor at the University of Groningen (RUG) and the Groningen University Medical Center (UMCG). The Board of Governors monitors the objectives of the university and functions as its supervisory council.

Wim van de Donk to be presented with Visser-Neerlandia Award on October 13
12th October 2023As King’s Commissioner for the province of North Brabant, Professor Wim van de Donk worked to strengthen collaboration between North Brabant and Flanders. In recognition of this achievement, the ANV (Algemeen Nederlands Verbond) will present him with the annual Visser-Neerlandia Award in Leuven on October 13.

Tilburg University and The Foodbank join forces to lower barriers to food aid
18th October 2023Around 180,000 people in our country receive support from the Dutch association for food banks. Although these figures illustrate that many individuals can find their way to food banks, estimates suggest that a far greater number of citizens qualify for such aid. In a collaborative effort, Tilburg University and Food Banks Netherlands are working together to lower the barriers to accessing food banks.

Tilburg University partner in Region Deal Central Brabant
02nd November 2023On November 1, the Dutch Ministry of the Interior launched the Regional Deal on ‘Entrepreneurship, innovation, and experimentation with a people-oriented focus’. This Central Brabant Regional Deal consists of nine projects aimed at promoting broad prosperity, on regional and national levels. Tilburg University fulfils a role in five of the nine projects.
